History of the Alpha Tau Omega Chapter 

Alpha Tau Omega Chapter in the Sensational South Central Region. They serve San Antonio, Texas, known as Military City USA, and surrounding cities.

The chapter celebrates 90 years of service excellence. Chartered on November 15, 1930, by 8 women and have grown to almost 300 members! The chapter’s  membership consists of native San Antonians, Sorors transplanted through their employers and several active duty military and veterans.

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Tau Omega Chapter, is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college educated women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind.

History of the Alpha Alpha Xi Omega Chapter 

In 2016, Jackie L. Gorman and a few other members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated began to discuss Gorman’s vision of starting a second graduate chapter in the city of San Antonio. In September, Gorman contacted the newly elected South-Central Regional Director, Ms. Katina M. Semien, Esq, to establish a new graduate chapter. With the information in hand, Gorman sprang into action and called upon other sorority sisters to further discuss starting a new chapter and what it entailed. In late November 2016, eight people met in the home of SaWanna Ballou. Of Those eight people who decided to move forward, Jackie Gorman and SaWanna Ballou, they included Kristina Jonson, who could not attend that meeting. Their passion and commitment to serve in the San Antonio community inspired them to begin a second chapter to be chartered by the end of 2017. This group of three reached out to known inactive sorority members in the area with the intent of reclaiming those lost pearls. On December 17, 2016, six additional people joined the effort: Camilla Madden, Tumeia Ford, T.J. Haygood, Kresskala Rochelle Stewart, Natania Gertman, and Tammy Hall. The group agreed to meet monthly, set up small committees, develop a timeline, and discuss the reactivation/transfer process. Over twenty people joined the group for its first sisterly relations activity at the movie theater to view “Hidden Figures,” followed by lunch.

Fourteen ladies attended a subsequent meeting on January 21, 2017, where several budget proposals were discussed and the group decided on the name the ” Alamo City Tea Roses,” highlighting their strong connection to the Alamo City Community. The following month, fifteen members elect officers: Jackie Gorman-President, Kristina Johnson- Vice President, Natania Gertman-Secretary, Camilla Madden-Financial Secretary, and Jasmyn Dexter (Henderson)-Treasurer and approve the budget. The group persevered and steadily increased to twenty-nine committed members by June 2017. On June 2, 2017, the application to establish the Alamo City Tea Roses as an official Interest Group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc in San Antonio, Texas, was submitted to the South-Central Regional Director. The application included letters of support from Mayor Ivy Taylor, Councilman Ron Nirenberg, County Commissioner Tommy Calvert, and Northside Independent School District Trustee Bobby Blount. During the summer of 2017, several group members attended the Alpha Kappa Alpaha Sorority, Inc Leadership Seminar in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the Fall of 2017, thirteen group members met with Regional Director, Ms. Katina Semien, Esq. at the Southwest Central Texas Cluster Retreat in Austin, Texas, to discuss the application’s status and the steps moe the process forward. In May 2018, the Regional Director, Ms. Katina M. Semien, Esq. and her Executive Director, Ms. Lynn Farris, visited with the group in San Antonio. The organization had grown to forty-five members and established a footprint in the greater San Antonio area. With the Regional Director’s recommendation, the Directorate approved the Alamo City Tea Roses as an Official Interest Group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc on November 3, 2018. As a result, the Alpha Alpha Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was charted on March 7, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas. The Chapter had 47 Charter members and an additional nine initial chapter members. This paved the way for these ladies to remain committed to the mission of service to all mankind…Blooming in Sisterhood and Rooted in Service!

January 15, 1908 at Howard University, Washington, DC. Incorporated as a perpetual body in 1913.
